Naha Bay Preservation Coalition was created in May 2005 to preserve 64 acres of land from major development. The property is located adjacent to Loring Alaska and once was a bustling salmon cannery site. For 75 years the property had remained untouched. Nature has taken back the land, with second growth Sitka Spruce covering cannery remnants and creeks full of spawing pink and chum salmon. The land has important cultural and state historical values. Through the summer the coalition gained support and momentum from Naha Bay neighbors and Ketchikan area residents. We had one goal, to preserve for the public and for future generations a unique piece of land. Though the sale of the land closed to a private developer, Naha Bay Preservation Coalition remains as a voice for preserving Naha Country. Our mission is to preserve and protect Naha Bay for future generations. Times are changing fast in SE Alaska, development is favored over preservation. There needs to be a balance. The coalition hopes to stress how you can have economic development while still preserving natural beauty and ecology. In the long run, preservation is the key to economic success for SE Alaska. In our great country, Alaska is truely the last frontier.
